Hand Hygiene and Habit Formation

Enhandsor was a project initiated by  Reshmaan Hussam, Natalia Rigol, and Giovanni Reggiani from the Economics program at MIT. We worked on the design of electronics, firmware, data logging system, enclosures and manufactured 1500 devices in China, and it is still actively collecting data in West Bengal, India. 

Persuading people to engage in simple behaviors that can improve their health should be easy. Handwashing, if performed at the right time, could save millions of children from stunting and death through infectious diseases every year. Existing public health campaigns have focused on education, but these efforts have time and again failed to change behavior and improve health.

Three million children die every year from bacterial and viral contamination. Handwashing with soap is the most cost effective ‘vaccine’, but campaigns throughout the world fail to produce behavioral change or meaningful health impacts.
